Ingleton – North Yorkshire, Historically and Geologically Famous

The magnificent countryside, mountains, waterfalls and caves, North Yorkshire Dales form an impressive backdrop to the small village of Ingleton. The area is crossed by Craven’s failure and this makes it an ideal place for both geological and archaeological sites.

The history of this town dates back to the Iron Age when the focus was a fortress at the top of Ingleborough. More recently, however, is home to more commercial interests, such as quarrying. There was a time when mining was also of commercial interest, but this has been stopped now. The housing area, which was built for miners is still living in what is called the new village. Cotton milling was also an industry in its day, and the remains of the cotton mill race can still be seen near the River.

Mealbank quarry is now the site of a conservation park and here you can see the first Hoffman kiln. The town square speaks of agrarian past and the marks of the old bullring can still be seen, there are a number of 16th century buildings still standing. The oldest relic in the town one can see in the Church of Santa Maria, this is a source of Norman, who was found in the river during the last century is 800 years!

Famous historical and geological, Ingleton Caves have been mentioned by many centuries, with a first written in 1700 regarding YORDAS Cave, a priest was going on. Thousands of these caves can be explored, making it a popular area for cavers and Spelologists.

In a small village near Masongill’s mother called Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Doyle lived in Mason House. Visited the area regularly, like Thackeray and other poets. The Rev. Sherlock is famous (or infamous) for having been struck by lightning in Ingleton station, and there is a nearby town known as Holmes, any guesses on how the name of the famous character was Arthur Conan Doyle? This information certainly gives pause for speculation!
